Valentine's Discussion...

In regards to Japanese Valentine's Day,
With the different times and experiences I had in Japan over the last years, I almost had mistaken the Tanabata festival on July 7th in asian cultures as a version of St. Valentines Day. I have never had a chance to be in Japan during the 2nd month of the year or February yet. I know it is a happy time of year for the girls and ladies who wish to give gifts and a hopeful time of year for the boys who I assume have a small competition amongst themselves as to who might get the most chocolate or ones who care for them. I think for the girls, that it must be stressful as one in Japan usually tries to be fair to all and it can be an expensive holiday, if one wants to give each boy they know and even amount of chocolate and consideration. I remember sometimes that lesser likened co-workers can sometimes get chou-giri, or cheap chocolate as like a 2nd prize level gift, but I suppose any gift is nice when someone doesn't really like you. I remember some friends in Aomori told me about 友チョコ (friend chocolates) or chocolate between girls who are friends and they enjoyed talking of those girl to girl gifts very much. To me it sounded like a fun little experience of gift giving, and I don't know too many who don't like chocolate. Sorry for those that don't.
I think the occasion is a great idea, especially for the business it can create, but I can see a little stress that can occur around it, or at least of worrying that you might forget someone, or which boys might be hoping for a chocolate. I hope not to many boys get devastated for not recieving any.
Even though I am not the fastest at baking things, I would try my best during White day to return some cookies or something home-made back to the girls I like or enjoy being around, or at least sending them a card back for recognizing the thought of them wishing to give me a gift. I would feel worried making a girl wait one full month for giving them a gift in return. This time of year the ladies must be patient as waiting for spring can be another thing they wait for at the same time as well. I think the love day of Feb 14 is too commericialized and I would try my best to make or find unique gifts instead of buying something, but I can see that sometimes buying something worth a lot is usually a good final trump card. I will be in Japan this year, during White Day for spring break, I am a little nervous of what I should do. I have some ideas to try. If anyone as any ideas let me know ok.. lol ;)

  1. I nearly forgot that you mentioned that you were going to Japan for Spring break. Good luck with making White Day chocolate, I'm sure you'll do fine.
